Transformations

We have been experiencing a deluge of rainfall this spring.  Yesterday, we noticed a significant amount of water coming out of the hillside above the driveway and emptying amongst the dogwood trees.  It is flowing at such an alarming rate and in such a significant amount that we called our water authority to come and check that it was not a burst pipe.  It is not.

Something shifted or cracked and a spring has opened in the hillside.  Springs ebb and flow and move around, so I’m uncertain what will happen to this one.  I am concerned it will flood the dogwoods, however, so I plan to keep a close eye on it.  Unfortunately, it is not in a location where we could make a pond or capture it easily. We will see how it evolves, but I am accepting that the hillside may look a little different in the upcoming year.

This seems appropriate for what I’ve been feeling and observing around me, and that is a state of transformation, or maybe better yet, an evolution.  Several friends and colleagues are making life changes- perhaps a reflection of the stages of life we are reaching.  Regardless, what follows will be a new version of what was there previously.  And this is okay.

The farm is certainly evolving, too.  We are completing construction on our new “She Shed” as we are all jokingly calling it.  Essentially, I am moving production from our home basement to a central area at the front of the farm where we can handle 30,000 bulbs, orders, seeding and dried flowers like you’ve never seen.  It will improve our visibility and ease of customer pick up and workshop attendance.  Most important, it will give me separation of home and farming.

We are embarking on our third (and final!) succession of specialty tulips- the field grown ones.  They have shorter stems, but truthfully, I’m not sure that’s a bad thing.  Regardless- they are equally stunning, and I hope you will continue to enjoy them this month.

Mother’s Day is around the corner!!!!
