Transitions

Hello from the Farm!  We are moving into the summer, and what a time of transition it has been.  Between the fields, re-entry from COVID, and my family, I feel like changes are happening everywhere in my world, and truthfully, some are easier than others.

I haven’t stopped moving since mid-March.  Spring brought beautiful Tulips and Narcissus- exploding with color and hope and an awareness that brighter and warmer days were coming.  Between harvests, I was starting seeds and preparing for the season to follow.  Anemones and Peonies simultaneously burst as we were prepping and planting the fields with the thousands of seedlings.  Suddenly my gardens were exploding with life and color- some managed and some not!  It was challenging to say goodbye to some special crops while anticipating the next ones.

These transitions ironically reflect personal ones that are happening, as well.  We have faced a re-entry to a world on the downside (maybe?) of this pandemic.  It’s awkward and a bit strange to move from barely interacting to big celebrations, and I feel shy facing so many people.  Another huge transition for my family is my daughter’s graduation from high school last week.  This little being who has consumed my world for the past 20 years is moving on and taking a piece of me with her.  I am so excited for her next steps and so emotional about her leaving us.

Transitions. Necessary but somewhat painful.  There is a natural lull on the farm as we segue from spring to summer.  As a flower farmer, I am getting better at lessening the number of weeks of fewer flowers.  It is a rebuilding time, and I try to appreciate the focus and patience required for the fields.  I anticipate the explosion of sunflowers, snapdragons, amaranth, celosia, ammi, DAHLIAS, and a host of other beautiful flowers that will fill CSAs, bouquets, arrangements and weddings in the upcoming months.  They won’t disappoint.  In the meantime, enjoy the calm and roll with the changes.  They are inevitable.
